ManasaMitra was born from the collective voice of a community that dared to listen deeply to its youth. The Pattambi Youth Summit 2024 was a pivotal moment—a gathering that convened over 100 young delegates, educators, mental health professionals, and institutional stakeholders under a shared mission: to reimagine youth well-being and education in Kerala.
Hosted as a flagship initiative to transform Pattambi into India's first Learning Constituency, the summit uncovered a striking reality. Mental health emerged as the single most critical issue facing adolescents today. 69% of participants identified it as a key barrier impacting academic success, emotional balance, social growth, and career readiness.
Young voices spoke clearly—about the weight of academic pressure, the anxieties driven by social media, and the strain of expectations at home. Yet, beyond identifying problems, they called for solutions. Students demanded meaningful interventions: school-based mindfulness programs, emotional support systems, and mental health education as core components of their learning environment.
The summit also shed light on another dimension: the mental health literacy gap among adults. Teachers often felt ill-equipped to recognize emotional distress in students, while parents expressed uncertainty in how to support their children. This dual gap—student need and adult unpreparedness—formed the core problem that ManasaMitra was designed to address.
Endorsed the summit's resolutions, which included immediate investment in mental health awareness, capacity building among educators, and family-level interventions. These discussions directly catalyzed the launch of ManasaMitra— an integrated, scientifically designed programme rooted in communityinformed priorities and evidence-based strategies
At the heart of ManasaMitra lies the enduring vision of the late Dr. P. Krishna Kumar, former Director of IMHANS. His commitment to embedding clinical accuracy, ethical depth, and holistic care in school mental health practices continues to inspire our mission.
We believe that no child should fall through the cracks of silence, stigma, or ignorance. ManasaMitra is more than a programme—it is a movement to empower schools, educators, families, and communities to nurture resilient, emotionally healthy generations.
